February 25, 2019, Dar Es Salaam. Airtel Tanzania’s mobile money services, Airtel Money, in partnership with Mastercard and Selcom, announced the launch of  Mastercard QR(MCQR) Code “Scan & Pay” on their newly updated Airtel Money app. The partnership aims to transform digital payments in Tanzania by enabling customers to make safe and secure mobile money payments online, and in stores.

Smartphone users can make payments by scanning the  QR code at merchant locations that accept MCQR. Customers who do not own smartphones can still continue to pay via USSD menu by entering the 8-digit Pay number under Merchant Payments when they dial *150*60#.

"Our focus is to enable the merchants by enabling them to receive payments digitally, create a track record, have information that helps a lender determine creditworthiness, thereby gain access to finance."

Commenting on the launch of the MCQR on the Airtel Money app, Selcom’s Executive Director Sameer Hirji said “Airtel Money has contributed greatly towards financial inclusion and Selcom is pleased to have been a part of this process enabling almost 50,000 merchants to receive payments digitally without the customer incurring any costs. Selcom looks to further this initiative through the financial empowerment of the merchant by creating access to finance to make it possible for the merchant to borrow to grow - whether it is through the provision of much-needed cash injections or setting up mechanisms to mitigate against shocks. We look forward to continuing to add to the MCQR-accepting merchant base and developing products focused around the merchant’s financial empowerment”
